Who’s and what’s…

I am an Educational Psychologist working for Perth and Kinross council. I have been involved in projects to support teachers, through practitioner enquiry, to learn about executive functions (EF) and teach self regulation (SR) to children and young people. I will soon undertake a short study visit to the USA to learn more about how their schools are supporting SR using Tools of the Mind, an evidence based curricular program and will attend the 7th Annual Conference for Executive Functions (see registration website).

I will visit two Tools of the Mind sites: Long Branch public school, New Jersey on Tuesday 4th October and the Children’s Aid Society, New York on Wednesday 5th October. I will observe lessons and speak with staff, children and parents. The conference is on Friday 21st October in Burlington, MA.

I applied for, and was granted, funding from the Scottish Division of Educational Psychology (SDEP) to support the trip and bring information back to Scotland. I am grateful for that, to Perth and Kinross Education and Children’s Services for supporting me with some of the time and to Perth and Kinross Educational Psychology Service for initially introducing me to the impact of self regulation strategies.

A bit about this site…

This website is an effort to share learning in (almost) real time. Working in an online space is new, feels a bit scary and is highlighting my poor confidence with grammar rules. I will not confess to how long it took to think of a website name and can’t confess to how many times I saw the message “this website already exists”. The current name is not very close to the original efforts but does try to capture something about this trip and the work I have been involved in so far with self regulation and executive functions. I will also be on Twitter (@GHorribine), trying to ‘up’ my Tweeting skills. All views are my own.
